This is the Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon Ford GT40 before the start of the 24hrs race. 24h later they won the race… The 1966 finish remains, however, the closest in Le Mans history. Ford’s 1-2-3 finish in 1966 was America’s first win at LeMans.

JOHN EDGAR bought three PorscheÖs 550 Spyder, Edgar Team chief mechanic JOE LANDAKER works on the Edgar-owned Porsche 550A-0104 (foreground) while driver JACK McAFEE (in blue overalls) and team mechanic HARRY JONES (in red) make engine adjustments on one of the other two 550s present at this November 4, 1956 SCCA National Road Races meet on the Palm Springs, California airport circuit. The red cars pictured are EdgarÖs Ferrari 857S (#99) and Ferrari 410 Sport (#88), the car in which Edgar driver Carroll Shelby won the Palm Springs main that day. In the background there is one of the very first Big Race Car Transporters on the racing scene. The hot-rodded GMC tractor hauled this Fruehauf trailer designed to carry three race cars and fitted with stove, refrigerator, sink, well-stocked liquor and Champagne bar, and four pull-down sleep bunks.
